<Swan/+report> Big day for news today. Iran's
parliamentary speaker said they would enter the war if
Israel retaliates. Israel said it would retaliate. A
bunch of iraqi armor was caught moving around last night
and destroyed. About 24. saddam said in a cnn interview
that his scuds can carry chemical weapons. USSR put forth
a peace initiative the USA has actually approved. Bush is
giving his state of the union speech at 9EST (pretty soon).
send me a /msg and let me know if you think a
transcription of Bush's state of the union address would be
   a good thing for +report

<Swan/+report> okay the yes votes radically outnumber the

<Swan> testing 1...2..3... Time to test my typing skills.
I'm on a shitty terminal with keys that repeat so bear with
me. Bush state of ze union address: (shocking amount of
applause) "thank you very much." (introduced by house
speaker). I come to this house of the people to speak to
you and all americans. Half way around the world we are
engaged in a great struggle. We know why we are there. We
are americans part of something greater than ourselves. We
lead the world in facing down a threat to decency and
humanity. Talks about a new world order involving peace
and freedom. "The community of nations has resolutely
gathered to condemn and repel saddam. " talks about rape
of kuwait. The world has said that this agression will not
stand, and it will not stand. Together we have resisted
the trend of appeasement, cynicism, and isoltion that gives
risee to tyrants. " Calls for immediate withdrawal of iraq
from kuwait. "with few excepetions the world stands as one.
A year and a half ago I said my goal was a free europe.
That has happened. " (I am going to paraphrase and
summarize throughout). Like many nations, we have been
deeply concerned about violence in the baltics, we have
communicated that concern to soviet leadership. Our
objective is to heelp baltics acheive their aspirations,
not to punish USSR. In recent discussions with USSR they
said they'd move away from violence and open negotionations.
(saw this in the papers today myself). Want to see USSR
continue on path to reform. If possible, I want to build a
lasting basis for good USSR relations. [] for 2 centuries
america has served world as inspiring example of freedom
and democracy. We are americans. We have a unique
responsibility to do the hard work of freedom. And when we
do, freedom works. The coviction and courage we see in
thee gulf is simply the american character in action. The
indominable spirit. We are resolute and resourceful. If
we can selflessly confront (saddam) then surely we can make
this land all it should be. (I'm missing alot but doing my
best). This is not just a new call for govt initiatives,
this is a call for initives in govt. To prepare am. for
next century. Which americans will lead us into next cent?
Everyone who steps forward to. deal with problems such as
drugs, aids, homelessness. (basically talking about how
individuals in communities everywhere can make a difference.
1000 points of light idea.). We all have something to
give. If you know how to read, find someone who cant. If
you have a hammer find a nail. If you are not
hungry/lonely/etc.. find someone who is. This spirit will
define the state of our union. Since the birth of our
nation we the people have been the source of our strength.
What govt can do is limited, but the potential of the
people is unlimited. We are a practical yet idealistic
people. Talks about giving strength to people instead of
bureaucracies. The strength of a democracy is not in
bureaucracy it is in the people. Lets release the
potential of our most potent resource, the citizens
themslves. the power to chart their own destiny is
important. In some regions of the country people are in
genuine economic distress. Talks about sympathy for them.
There are reasons to be optimistic about economy. Wee
don't have doublee digit inflations. Exports are running
strong. Exports are at a record rate. We've had a
temporary stop to the largest peacetime economic growth.
We'll get over it soon. We'll get on our way to a new
record of expansion, and acheive competitive strength that
will carry us into future. We must begin with control of
fed. spending. (monstrous applause) That's why I'm
submitting budget that holds spending to less than
inflation. Says we need new spending caps. Talks about
deficit reduction, and how this heelps saving and job
investment. My budget includes tax free family savings
accounts, penalty free IRA accounts for first time
homebuyers, reduced taxes for capital gains for economic
growth. Acknowledges differences on capital gains
incentive. Asks congress. leaders to participate in study
on capital gains tax. Calls for end to partisan bickering.
Long term investment needed for america, forward looking
needed. Detailed series of proposals to promote investment
in americas future. Space, education, children,
   infrastructure, technology. Talks about education
proposals. And improving infrastructure. "permanent tax
credit for private research and development needed".
Comprehensive energy policy, calling for development, alt.
fuel, conservation and something else. (lots of applause).
Banking reform to keep banks secure and safe. So banks can
make job creating loans. Calls for lowering of interest
rates by fed. Economic strength depends on being
competitive in world markets. Must continue to expand
exports. Trade agreements among nations will create jobs
and growth for all parties involved. Talks about mexican
free trade agreement. Wants a free trade zone throughout
   the hemisphere.

<Swan> Again stresses giving power to individual.
Encouraging investment. Wants public housing to be tenant
owned. Civil rights are crucial to protecting opportunity.
(applause) everyone of us has a responsibility to speak
out against racism, bigotry, hatred. We will continue our
rigorous enforcement of exist. statues and once again I
will call for improved civil rights laws. We are
determined to protect another civil right, freedom from
crime. We need tough crime control legislation and we need
it now. Will fully implement drug laws. Are making
progress with drug problem, but much is needed to be done.
Good health care is every americans right and
   responsibility. Proposing prevention initiatives for
everyone to promote healthy american and keep costs from
spiraling. Time to give people more choice in govt. By
revising idea of politician who comes to stay instead of to
serve. People are concerned about big money influence in
politics. We must look beyond the next election. Raises
voice. LETS PUT THE INTEREST OF AMERICA ABOVE SPECIAL
INTERESTS AND SELFISH CONCERNS. Talks about moving power
away from federal government to local governments. 15
billion dollars to be turned over to states so they can
more flexibly manage certain programs. The value of this
approach allows fed to reduce overhead and states to run
things more flexibly and efficiently, and returns power to
people. He really is stressing this power to the people
thing. Empowerment. We must accept our responsibility to
lead world away from dictatorships toward promise of better
day. There is no one more devoted, committed, than our
servicemen in the gulf. (standing ovation). Applause with
no end. Applause with no end continues. :). What a
fitting tribute to them (the applause). Each of them has
volunteered to provide for nations defense. Now they
struggle for future gennerations lasting peace and
prosperity. They are truly americas finest. War in gulf
is not what we wanted. We worked hard to avoid it with
european, UN, arab communitees. Rattles off huge list of
leaders he worked with to head off the war. All worked for
a solution. Time and again, saddam flatly rejected path of
diplomacy and peace. The war began on august 2nd when he
sacked kuwait. We will prevail. (standing ovation).
Tonight I am pleased to report that we are on course,
iraq's capacity to sustain war has been destroyed.
Planning paid off. Time is not saddams salvation. Our
purpose is constant, to drive Saddam out of kuwait,
<chuck/+report> SALUTE TO PRESIDENT BUSH!
<Swan> to insure stability of region, restore old kuwait
govt. By stability and security I mean an iraq that
doesn't serve ambitions of tyrant but one that seeks a
better life for its people. We had to stop saddam now not
later. Gives examples of saddams recent tyranny. We don't
want arms races and confrontrations but rather the rule of
law. Democracy gives rise to thoughtful decent. A handful
reckless, most responsibile. Says this is part of america,
this right to dissent. Our steadfast committment to strong
defense is important. Talks about patriot and SDI. Wants
to refocuse SDI to protect from >limited< ballistic missile
strikes. Talks about sympathy for families of those in the
gulf. (applause). Our forces will not stay in gulf one
day longer than is needed to complete their mission. Talks
about courage of various allies. mentions the long list of
them in the gulf. And the unity of the UN on this issue.
Our allies provided bulk of costs for desert shield/storm.
Got 40 billion committment so far from allies to pay for it.
If saddam thinks he'll get advantage by targetting israel
and saudi he is dead wrong. if he thinks torturing
enviroment will hlep him he is dead wrong. If he thinks
torturing pows will help him he is dead wrong. (applause).
When we succeed in gulf this will be a warning for present
and future despots who contemplate agression.
<moron/+report> why is everyone applauding after every
other piece of nonsense he utters, as if it is a Bon Jovi
   concert?
<Swan> Yes the US bears a major share of leadership in this
effort. Among the world only the US has both the moral
standard and the means to back it up. This is the burden
of leadership, the strength that makes america the beacon
of freedom. This nation has never found glory in war. Our
people never want to abandon peaceful way of life to fight
abroad. We yearn for a world where we will not have to
fight again. The cost of closing our eyes to agression is
beyond mankinds power to imagine. Our causee is just moral
and right. Big applause again. standing ovation. Let
future generations understand the blessings and burden of
freedom. Let them know that together we affirmed america
   as a community of conscience.
<moron/+report> why are they applauding so vehemently?
Like it's Jesse Jackson or something!
<Swan> That's it folks. I missed quite a bit. Standing

<Swan> heres the democratic response. Sen george mitchell
democratic leader. Before the war began, we debated openly.
We agreed saddam must leave kuwait, by force if necessary.
No one will know if sanctions could have worked. Now we
are committed to backing troops. Our troops deserve our
full support. Our support wont end when the fighting ends.
They must know that a greatful natin cares abot theem.
For 10 years US policy favoreed iraq, we must not make this
mistake again. Talks about tianamen/baltic/etc being as
bad as kuwait. We must oppose all agression. Talks about
other countries contributing their fair share. "they
aren't doing it yet". Congradulates israel for not
retaliating. Says this is proof of israels frieendship.
We have a crisis abroad, but we have a crisis at home too.
1,000,000 americans out of jobs today. Banks in trouble.
Our strength is working families. They are the true
measure of our national vitality. Talks about strength of
people and tech in military. We must apply our talent and
tech now to peace. Can't we make vcrs like we make bombs?
Our first priority must be economic growth. innovation
investment critical to growth. Best social program is a
good job. Energy policy is important to growth. We should
have learned our lesson from thee oil shocks of 70's. Must
change reliance on oil. must encourage alt fuels
conservation etc. Must combat pollution before it makes
much of the earth uninhabitable. Must save banks before
they fall not after. We want a better society for
everyonee. Emphasis and resources belong at state and
local level. This is front line for war on drugs and
pverty. We spend more on health care than any other
country. Yet 37 mil dont have any health care. Long term
care for elderly important. Govt. must be more careful
with tax dollars. Must bring deficit down, jobs home.
Bush gave tax cuts to those with over 200k income. Wants
middle class and poor to get relief not rich. What
americans need is opportunity. The chance to succeed
   through hard work.

<Swan> Is ameica winning first round of war? (peter
arnett). (saddam) The darkness will not penetrate the
light of the iraqi people. The people of the USA and the
world will decide if we are winning. They were defeated
the moment they decided to attack. Because they made a
wrong and unjust decisio. The US has not won the hearts
and minds of the people. cnn: Iraq wasn't affected as much
now compared to iran iraq war, how would you compare these
two wars? s: our people now have never been as pure as
they are now. Our armed forces have never been so
determined. iran and iraq are two neighboring muslim
countries. Regardless of past, these facts are the most
important in our relationship. The battle nnow is between
faith and infidels. It's only natural that planes in
trouble would land in a neeighboring islamic country. cnn:
use these planes in future conflict? s: we respect the
rules and regulations of iran. This is saddam and cnn.
Did iraq spill oil in gulf? s: the western media is wrong.
The oil is from the attacks by american forces. The US
has not denied attacks on tankers they knew were loaded
with oil. US attacked oil installations too. It's hard to
understand this stuff from saddam's transcriber. The US
did not hit these oil facilities out of legitimate military
interests. If my field commanders weree to use oil that
comes under the framwork of legitimate self defense, like
trenches filled with burning oil or whatever, then these
commanders will have justification for doing this. The US
has used this oil in a manner which is unnecessary. The
undenial facts remain that the US attacked tankers loaded
with oil, they knew they were loaded with oil.
(undeniable). The fact is that when those tankers were
attacked, they were in iraqi territorial waters. The US
did attack oil pipelines and flatforms and has made public
this fact. The american experts know that if you destroy
these things, you get an oil spill. If the iraqies used
oil for self defense including use of oil in waters, the
iraqis will be justified in doing this. The future will
show what action the US is responsible for ad which iraq is
responsible for. cnn: using pows as human shields? saddam:
This was announced by an official authority. Can the
west really take the high ground about morality? s:
remember the west described my human shields before the war
as being immoral and inhuman? And the west was talking
about its tender humanity, bragging about their humanity?
s: the west criticised my decision at the time. Do you
know about the restrictions put on western Iraqis?
American iraqis? The arabs in western countries are facing
the same kind of restrictions as with my human shields. s:
is not this a double standard? The west's hypocrisy has
been exposed very quickly. s: we need to stand up to
western arrogance. The human being inside those of the
west, the humanity of french and brits, needs our rejection
of their arrogance. (don't ask me). s: we need to expose
the wests double standard. the world needs to tell those
with the biggest stick in the world, that they cannot
destroy the people of god, the humanity of man. s: The
devil inside inside bush needs to be shown this. s: does
the geneva convention allow iraqi citizens in western
countries to be taken prisoner? This is a double standard.
(referring to peter arnetts pow question). s: the west
tries to discipline smaller countries while showing that
theey themselves are above law. s: bush knows that our men
are strong in their determination. Bush did not come to
kill our military men he came to kill our women and
children. s: bush said he came to dislodge iraq from
kuwait but he is a liar. I don't want to insult anyone,
but I must use this word. s: no attack was launched
against kuwait initially. He started his attack against
baghdad, not our military forces but our economic
   installations.
<LogServ> *** Iraqi Time is Wed 30, 08:00, Israel is one

<Swan> s: Did you ask yourselves why america destroyed my
nuclear power? Isn't it clear that this battle is not for
kuwait, but for other reasons. s: talks about some
conspiracy planned against iraq before aug 2nd invasion of
kuwait. (?). s: 5 months prior to the 2nd of august the US
prevented Iraq from buying various food items. US
boycotted iraq in tech areas too 5 months before my
invasion of kuwait. s: it regrettable that the average US
citizen has been allowed to see all the decisions and
events that led to things we see now. s: This has helped
bush, it helped him to be able to lie. We are here to help
you discover these lies. s: bush cannot deny he attacked
Iraq and not kuwait. The world has seen this. cnn: allies
say they might be able to beat you with air power, perhaps
only requiring mopping up by ground forces. comment? s:
we warned you about this. You must remember the amount of
time they said it would take. Some even suggested us
collapsing in 24 hours. Hosni (egypt) said we would
collapse soon too. This is not the case. s: some
suggested a 72 hour period. We tried to spare humanity
this bloodshed. This is why we were candid in explaining
the facts. s: we said our people would never succumb to
intimidation, that we believed in dialogue. That this
would spare mankind this bloodshed. We warned you that
this would not be short and easy. That lots of blood would
be shed. We had no interest in dragging anyone into a war.
The west including bush said they would enter this war
without a single american getting wounded. has this been
the case? We are only at the very outset of this war.
Only 11 days. Is it true that no americans have been
wounded? What happens if war expands or. begins taking a
more comprehensive form? As for our men in kuwait, whoever
attacks them should be defeated. It is not a question of
who has more weapons. It is a question of who has the
devil on their side, and who has god on their side. s:
which party came thousands of miles to attack the land of
another? Who came to occupy someone's sacred lands? The
answer is clear. Do you think the pilots bombing baghdad
from great heights,. which makes it so they don't know
where their bombs fall, are happy? We have killed more of
your pilots than you have seen on tv. s: I ask those who
saw the pilots directly... I asked them if they felt
repentant. They said yes, and some of them were crying.
Some were in tears. s: i ask those manning my anti
aircraft if they are proud of what they do. (yes). These
men have shown great heroism. Is this making any sense?
The bad english isn't mine. Anyway I'm doing my best. s:
how can such a small people face such a tyrannical
combination of great forces? The west must ask themselves
this. The simple answer is our determination and
conviction that we are fighting a just war. s: Once those
who seek the truth see this, they will try to reach a
solution through dialogue. Then they will discover many
new facts. cnn: what level of dialogue? dialogue possible
now? s: I am talking about genuine dialogue. Not with
agressors or tyrants. The evil people will leave and take
the results of their actions. cnn: what would you say to
those around the world seeking a peaceful solution? s:
This is a question that should be posed to Bush. Bush used
dialogue as a tactic. Remember it was we who proposed
dialogue. He rejected our proposal. s: we discovered that
once he rejected dialogue, he had opted for war. he was
using dialogue to silence parties who said he hadn't
exhausted all possibilities before going to war. s: we
expected this. Since the second of august, Bush had
decided to go to war. s: The hypocritical politicians of
the west criticised my attempt to avert war with my foreign
guests (human shields). They said letting them go would
prevent war. Now look. s: had we kept those 5000 human
shields here, would bush still have attacked? When we let
them go, we were not afraid of any action being taken
against us. s: This is clear to you now. We are not
afraid. We did not release these people out of fear, but
out of respect for the individuals. s: has bush acheived a
victory? I say no. I say Bush dealt himself a defeat the
moment he resigned himself to war. s: He is forcing you
into a situation in which you feel ashamed. I would be
ashamed too. Shame will turn into pain, pain will boil
   into revolution against Bush.

<Swan> s: because the american citizen is a human being,
that will ask themselves if these are the values of the US
as a superpower? s: do you feel that you are a great power
when you gather money for your war chest from other
countries, travel 1000's of miles to wage war, and see your
president proud that he is attacking a country of only 18
million people? s: We are going to fight in a manner that
will win the admiration of everyone. Lots of blood will be
spilled. The west does not ask how many iraqis have been
killed. s: Not even a single high official of the west
spoke of a desire not to see iraqi blood spilled. s: we
believe blood on every side spilled will be great. Saudi,
iraqi, US, etc.. Do not let the politicians deceive you
again by talking about an air battle because war is war.
cnn: chemical weapons, will you use them? s: we will use
the weapons that will be equitable to the weapons used by
our enemy. We have shown how true we are to our word, we
have done everything we've said. s: In any case we shall

All the force used against baghdad is Israeli. (smiles)
What interest would you as an american have here, if it
weren't the zionist influence on your administration. s:
this war is a zionist war. Only here, zionists are
fighting us through your blood. The zionists seek to be a
dominant power in the region once the war ends, this is why
they are preserving their weapons. s: had it not been for
the zionist influence you would not be here on the land of
mohammed. We shall not be deluded by appearances. I am
sure you remember we said if baghdad was attacked we would
attack tel aviv. s: We are telling the agressors of israel
that we know the ballgame, and to tell them further to
leave the land of palestine. And abandon the massacre they
are perpetrating on the palestinians. s: israel is
occupying the land of our people, the land of palestine,
the golan heights, part of lebanon, the west bank. Israel
is an occupier and an agressor against the arabs. s: This
is the message we wanted to convey with our missiles. cnn:
chemical warheads for your scuds, do you have them? s:
Scud is a soviet missile with limited range, the missile we
are talking about are iraqi missiles, al hussein missiles.
(saddam looks about as mellow as he did before the war.
Dressed in a suit and tie. Looks pretty relaxed and at
ease.). cnn: chemical warhead, will you use it against
israel/saudi? s: my missiles can carry chemical or
biological warheads. cnn: why only using conventional
warheads so far? s: I said earlier we will use weapons
that are equitable to those used against us. (equitable or
equate, the translator uses both). s: all this air
superiority has failed to unbalance us. We have maintained
our balance, and are using conventional warheads. s: we
pray we will not be forced into taking (a measure requiring
chemicals? Couldn't understand). s: Americans have
imposed great restrictions on your ability to learn the
simplest details of their military operations and soldiers.
This is a democracy? s: What is important for us is for
the iraqi individual to remain intact, sound in its faith
and self confidence and conviction that it is fighting on
the side of god. cnn: you called this the mother of
battles. Any doubts about the outcome? s: not one in a
million. We call it the mother of battles because the
truth will become clear because of it. We are convinced
god is on our side. The countries of dirty money are
grouped together against iraq. cnn: what impact would you
hope this interview has on the world? s: I have said what
I see to be the truth. Tell the americans we wish them
well, that none of their sons will die. We are greatful to
the demonstrators in the US demonstrating against the war.
s: and we are greatful to people all over the world in
england and france and everywhere demonstrating against the
   war.
