<Belladona/+report> US still considers iraqi offer
"conditional". Norm is giving complete briefing of entire
operation now. According to norm, we were originally
outnumbered 3:1 and they had more artillery than we did.
Air campaign was designed to even the odds
<Swan/+report> Schwarzkoph is basically going over our
initial strategy... rather thoroughly. Talks about making
the Iraqi's think we'd launch an amphibious operation so
that they'd have to defend against it. Schwarzkoph talks
about how we put special forces deep in iraqi territory as
recon. Schwarzkoph talks about how we launched fake
amphibious launchings and shore bombardment to keep shore
units confused and committed. Schwarkoph is saying the 2
marine divisions were absolutely brilliant breaching iraqi
defenses, allowing passage for other units. Says it's a
textbook example of perfection. Schwarzkoph Says weather
was an important concern. Was concerned about what was
going on in kuwait; this concern made him launch forces
early there. Talking about how deception was used in other
ways... using lots of simultaneous invasions accross the
front. Deception worked very well, letting them drive
around much of the enemy to thrust deep quickly.
Schwarzkoph says that if we wanted to take Iraq we would
could have done it unopposed at one time, but that wasn't
our intention. Special forces cleared mines and threatened
kuwaiti flanks making them think amphib was coming. I
can't get this all. Basically talking about how the french,
americans, and brits cut off retreat. He is basically
nominating the 1st and 2nd marine division for sainthood,
he is laying it on rather thick for these two divisions.
scud killed 28 wounded 90. 28 killed in ground war 89
wounded. 11 killed in air war 14 wounded.
<Belladona/+report> Low casualities almost miraculous
<Swan/+report> 3008 iraqi tanks destroyed, maybe 700 more
with battle going on right now. (they had 4230 to begin
with). 1856 of 2870 apcs toast. 50,000 POWS roughly.
(well over 50,000 pows I mean). 48. says nightmare
scenerio would have been for forces to get caught on
initial iraqi defenses while they hit us with chemical
weapons, which is why they hit the front so hard. says
there is a very very large number of dead in front units.
   That is verbatim.
<Belladona/+report> Norm says saddam doesn't have enough
left to be regional threat unless someone re-arms him.
Iraquis had alot of desertion & pows and very high death
   rate.
<Swan/+report> makes mention of "psi ops" (psychological
weapons operations) telling iraqis over and over to
surrender. says there is a lot more purpose to this war
than getting iraq out of kuwait... there are 12 UN
resolutions too. classic tank battle going on with
republican guard. They are continuing to fight. We are
trying outflank them, and we are using attack helicopters.
for last few days its been raining, dusty, smokey. Our
sights have worked very well through this stuff. The enemy
sights have not worked well. French screened the left
flank, performed extremely well. Says alot of iraqi planes
   dispersed through civilian communities.
<Belladona/+report> Norm says this was much easier than we
originally estimated. We had 60 days of provisions.
<Swan/+report> "surprised it was so easy? Saddam as
strategist?" "never assume away enemy capability, we
didn't expect it to be so easy. Saddam is not a strategist,
or a tactician, or a soldier, or a general"
<Belladona/+report> Norm has nothing complementary to say
   about saddam's military abilities
<Swan/+report> Special forces went with all arab forces to
   call in air strikes/helicopter strikes/provide
   communication/recon/search and rescue. talks about
unspeakable attrocities in kuwait. Says the iraqis who did
this are not part of the human race. Talks about kuwaitis
being taken away by iraqis. talks about fire trenches
being lit ahead of the ground offense (by napalm bombs I
think). Says they went through extensive measures to make
initial defenses (esp mine field) less effective. "how is
the rep guard?" "dedication is a lot of what makes an army
effective. many many desertions. Iraqi execution squads
for this. Soldiers don't fight well with this situations.
Blames low morale partially on poor leaders. says
leadership was uncaring, didn't feed them etc... Rep guard
on the other hand was better cared for.
<Belladona/+report> Also r. guard was well to the rear so
they could bug out if the going got rough.
<Swan/+report> says brits have been superb, magnificent,
etc... The people taken from kuwait by iraq were taken
mostly to basra, some maybe to baghdad. Prays they are
   returned safely.
<Belladona/+report> But Norm points out that that didn't
   happen!
<Swan/+report> says it is not in the interests of the world
to destroy iraq, says that was never bush's intention.
Says Iraq's war machine was not a defensive war machine.
<Xcalibur/+report> Norm says that we had been within 150
miles of bagdad..if it were our intention (it wasn't) we
could have taken the country without much problem...
<Swan/+report> says they tracked iraqi helicopters
carefully.. they put them in civilian areas to protect them
<Belladona/+report> Norm still doesn'. t know whether or
not Iraq has any scud ability left.
<Swan/+report> says we didn't make much progress in the
latter part of the air war because they were so well dug in.
says there is no escape from basra.
<Xcalibur/+report> Norm - doesn't know hy they didn't use
   chem weapons...
<Swan/+report> says we are still bombing military targets
   in north/central iraq
<Xcalibur/+report> Air campaign is still in progress.
<Swan/+report> says they are seperating out the POWS who
committed attrocities. Regrets the US killing 9 brits in a
   scout car accidentally.
<Belladona/+report> Norm says when they take pows that have
caused atrocities they separate themn out - treatment is no
different now but disposition might be different later.
<Swan/+report> Said they went to extraordinary lengths to
avoid friendly fire incidents, is glad they didn't have
more of them. says our intelligence estimates of how many
scuds they had were very inaccurate.
<Belladona/+report> Coalition forces are burying enemy dead
on the battlefield. We will never know how many dead there
   were.
<Swan/+report> clarifies earlier statement about there
being no escape from basra. Says civilians/unarmed people
may leave, but no tanks/artillery/apcs are getting through.
expresses thanks that Bush let tthem wage the war the way
it should have been fought, gives Bush high marks as
   commander in chief.
